“Picture Day” started out as a small project where the artist Cordell Murray, decided to buy a studio backdrop and set it up on a sidewalk in New York City. He messaged some friends and asked them to ride their bikes to his location. When the small group of friends arrived, Cordell told them to step onto his backdrop and model for him. The first group of friends participated without hesitation while bystanders on the sidewalk watched.

After that day Cordell decided to setup his backdrop in other locations in NY and send out his location and 10 photographs quickly turned into 100. At that moment Cordell decided to pack up his backdrop and bring it to a different city to see if he could tap into the cycling community there as well. He spent a weekend traveling to Raleigh, NC & Atlanta, GA and turned his collection into 200 photographs.

The first exhibition on Nov. 6, 2021 will feature all 200 individuals photographed in the streets of Manhattan, Raleigh & Atlanta. Photo Collection is a display of people from all walks of life that ride track bikes, tall bikes, road bikes, e-bikes, bmx, fixed gear, cargo bikes, skateboards, scooters & motorcycles.

This project is ongoing and Cordell has plans to travel to more cities and add more people to the collection. Many more Picture Day’s coming soon.

Equipment List for Project:

  • Camera (I use a Nikon D750)

  • Fabric Backdrop 10’ x 20’ (Fabric works best because you can tape it to the sidewalk and you can throw it in the washing machine after it gets dirty.)

  • Backdrop Support System 10’ (Support systems are really lightweight and not designed to be used outside. I made sure to purchase a system that can withstand the outdoors.)

  • Sand bags (An outdoor studio can be really windy and your backdrop will act as a sail when you put it up. Sandbags help weigh down the system so the wind doesn’t slam it to the ground.)
